Donato Nitti


Donato Nitti is presently Professor of Surgery at the University of Padova (School of Medicine), Padova, Italy. He is Chief of the Department of Oncological and Surgical Sciences as well as of the Surgery Branch at the University of Padova, Italy.
Donato Nitti, born in Italy on July 31, 1947, is married and lives in Padova (Italy). In 1971 he graduated in Medicine at the University of Padova. He specialized in General Surgery and in Oncology in 1976 and in 1979, respectively. In 1978 he got a NATO Scholarship at Institute Jules Bordet in Brussels (Belgium). In 1984 he was visiting surgeon at Roswell Park Memorial Institute of Buffalo and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center New York (USA). He was made a full clinical Professor of General Surgery at the University of Padova in 2000.
Prof. Nitti primary areas of research interests include gastric, colorectal , liver and breast cancer, skin melanoma and soft tissue sarcomas. Translational research on minimal residual disease and biomarkers that determine prognosis, genomic and proteomic profiling of tumors is the present focus of research of his team. Prof. Nitti has so far authored 195 scientific articles published in peer-review international journals.
Prof. Nitti was supervisor of more than 80 MD and PhD theses and coordinator of 8 Italian national projects. He was also coordinator of the following international research groups: 1982-1989 EORTC trial on adjuvant therapy (FAM2) for gastric cancer;1992-2000 EORTC trial on adjuvant FAMTX therapy for gastric carcinoma;1994-2000 EORTC and CNR (Comitato Nazionale Ricerche) project on "Chemotherapy with 5FU and leucovorin following potentially curative resection of liver and lung metastases from colorectal cancer.
Since 1978 he is an active member of Gastrointestinal Tract Cancer Group of the EORTC (European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer). From 1993 through 2006 he was also Treasurer of the GITCCG of the EORTC.
Prof. Nitti is member of numerous international scientific societies, including EORTC, American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO). Moreover, he is editor of various peer-review international journals including the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
