Dear Colleague,

I would like to introduce you to the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO), which was founded in 1981 to advance the art, science and practice of surgery for the treatment of cancer. Central to achieving this objective is ESSO’s willingness to collaborate, interact and foster an open exchange with a range of other specialities.

Over the last few years, our membership has grown with the addition of many national societies. This has enabled us to speak with a stronger voice for cancer surgery thereby ensuring that the views of our members are heard where it counts.
If you are a surgical specialist or a surgeon in training with an interest in cancer surgery then ESSO could be the organisation of choice for you.

ESSO is committed to the education and training of surgical specialists and we have a number of activities aimed at implementing the subject matter in our core curriculum. ESSO organises its own ESSO Congress (ESSO 32, Valencia) and, in partnership, the European Multisciplinary Cancer Congress (2011 in Stockholm, 2013 in Amsterdam)). On this website you will discover numerous courses, often arranged in association with other cancer societies as well as information concerning Fellowships that are available to facilitate atendance at meetings, courses or visits to specialist surgical cancer centres.

Another focus is our Quality Assurance (QA) Programme for different cancer diseases. Together with other specialities we have ongoing projects to evaluate the quality of cancer care, surgery and multimodality cancer treatments throughout Europe.

Finally, I look forward to meeting you at one of our Congresses or courses to share best practice in the field of surgical oncology – the core of our organisation.
