European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO) Award
2011 Award
Every two years, during the European Multidisciplinary Cancer Congress, the European Society of Surgical Oncology presents the ESSO Award in recognition of significant achievements in basic or translational research in oncology, clinical and educational contributions to oncology in general and surgical oncology in particular.
In 2011, the ESSO Awardalt was presented to Professor Riccardo A. Audisio for his extraordinary efforts to improve the outcome of breast cancer patients and his contribution to the management of geriatric cancer patients. He was also rewarded for his important role as an ambassador for surgical oncology and for his involvement in education and training of young colleagues from all parts of the world.
Riccardo was born in Milan, Italy, and graduated 25 years later (1980) in Padua. After a short surgical period in Verona he arrived at the National Cancer Institute of Milan in 1981 where he stayed for fourteen years. Riccardo is specialist in general surgery and in diagnostic radiology. In 1994 he was appointed Deputy Director at the Department of General Surgery of the European Institute of Oncology also. In 1999 the Milanese moved over the English Channel to the city of the Beatles, Liverpool. He is now Consultant Surgical Oncologist at the Whiston Hospital and Honorary Professor at the University of Liverpool.
Riccardo Audisio is a surgical oncologist with a broad repertoire. He is renowned for his clinical research interest in breast cancer and geriatric oncology but Riccardo also has an impressive record of publications in GI-cancer and HPB surgery. He is the author of over 165 peer-reviewed publications and 35 book chapters. Riccardo is the Editor-in-Chief of Surgical Oncology, belonging to 12 editorial boards and has edited 17 book projects.
Riccardo is a member of not less than 15 international scientific societies and is currently the President of SIOG (International Society of Geriatric Oncology) and President-Elect of BASO (British Association of Surgical Oncology). His devotion to the management of cancer in older patients has been pivotal in increasing awareness among surgeons. The importance of geriatric oncology has been better recognised.
2009 Award
On the occasion of ECCO 15 - ESMO 34, the ESSO Award was presented to Professor Theo Wiggers (NL) during a special ESSO award session on 23rd September.
The session, chaired by the ESSO President, C. van de Velde, discussed the management of patients who present with stage IV Colorectal Cancer.
The award lecture, by Professor Theo Wiggers, addressed the role of the colorectal surgeon. The role of the medical oncologist was presented by C. Punt whereas V. Valentini gave the point of view of radiation oncologist. R. Adam focused on the role of the liver surgeon. A panel discussion on the benefits of a multidisciplinary approach and moderated by I. Taylor concluded the session.
