Aim of the course
This course, jointly organized by ESTRO, ESSO and ESMO seeks to promote an integrated approach between all specialists involved in rectal cancer to tailor the best treatment for each individual patient. The most relevant ongoing questions in multidisciplinary management of rectal cancer patients will be addressed in open debates and interaction with experts. In a truly multidisciplinary atmosphere, you will be able to identify the major uncertainties of your daily practice and learn how to handle them. You will have the opportunity to design a new research, starting from available state of the art evidences. The presence of colleagues with different specialties, from all over the world, will enrich your perspective and your daily practice. Don't miss this chance to encounter the best science in rectal cancer patients' management.
Target Group
The target group consists of surgeons, radiotherapists and medicals oncologists involved in the multidisciplinary treatment of rectal cancer.
Educational Programme
Day 1
- What we consider state of art in rectal cancer by ESSO, ESMO, and ESTRO
- Epidemiology of rectal cancer in Europe - For surgery - For radiotherapy - For chemotherapy
- The house believes that mesorectal fascia involvement requires tailored treatment:
Case presentation - Is tumor penetration more dangerous than nodal involvement? - Is quality of surgery more relevant than stage? - Can radio(chemo-)therapy modify surgical margins?
Case Discussion - Workshops
Day 2
- The house believes that nodal status is not detectable by imaging:
Case presenation - Is nodal involvement location a prognostic factor? - Is nodal involvement detectable by imaging? - Does nodal status change radiotherapy strategy?
Case discussion - Workshops
- The house believes that laparoscopy surgery is a new gold standard:
Case presenation - Does open surgery see the nerves easily? - Does laparoscopy surgery handle the tumour extension properly? - Do evidences support laparoscopy surgery right now?
Case discussion - Workshops
- The house believes no surgery in responders patients is reliable: case presentation & case discussion
Case presenation - Are the data from Brazil enough? - Is a local excision necessary? - Is brachytherapy an option for these patients?
Case discussion
Day 3
- Workshops
- The house believes that (neo) adjuvant therapy options can be adapted to the response along the treatment course:
Case presentation - Is pre-operative MRI as a prognostic/ predictive marker in rectal cancer? - Can we manage a risk based choice for (neo)adjuvant treatment ? - How can we optimize timing, lasting, and drug choice for chemotherapy?
Case dicussion
- The house believes that synchronous metastatic patients can be cured:
Case presentation - What is the role and optimal timing of chemo? - What is the role and optimal timing of surgery? - What is the role and optimal timing of RT?
Case discussion - Working group on ‘New proposal for randomized studies’
Day 4
- The house believes that population based data are more relevant than randomized studies:
Case presentation - The epidemiology evidences - The Scandinavian approach - The EURECCA perspective
Case discussion - General debate on ‘New proposal for randomized studies
