2012 Flims Workshop

23-29 June 2012, Flims, Switzerland

alt The Flims Workshop on Methods in Clinical Cancer Research is jointly organised by the European CanCer Organisation (ECCO), the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) and the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO). In 2012 it will be held from 23 to 29 June.

Application deadline: 13th February 2012.

Alike previous years, ESSO will support the participation of 5 young surgeons amongst the selected applicants.

Applicants are expected to submit a proposal for a clinical trial which, if successful, they bring to the Workshop for development from the concept stage to a full protocol during the five days of the meeting. Their Heads of Department must support applicants and selection is based on competitive scoring of the submitted trial concepts by the faculty. It is intended that all proposals should be real projects which are likely to be brought to fruition as a clinical trial.

Every student is required to submit a completed protocol by the end of the workshop and the faculty work as hard as the students revising and re-reading draft protocols throughout the week. The aim is that, upon his return home, the applicant actually submits the protocol to the involved ethics board and performs the designed study.

The minimum selection criteria for the Workshop are the following:

  • Be a junior physician specialising medical, radiation, surgical or paediatric oncology, or a clinical professional who manages cancer patients (i.e. urologists, gynaecologists, neuro-oncologists, haematologists), or a radiologist with strong involvement in cancer care. Candidates must be in at least in 2nd year of training and within 5 years of completion of Residency/Fellowship training in one of the afore mentioned or related disciplines.
  • Have a major interest in clinical research and have the intention to develop a career in that field.
  • Aim to write and conduct a clinical protocol for a study not previously performed nor written, which is also considered feasible within the institutional setting and the time of completion of the clinical training of the candidate.
  • Be fluent in written and spoken English and have good computer skills
  • Have support from the Supervisor/Head of Department and sustained commitment in the years following the Workshop
