ESSO 2010 Congress Highlights
|
The 2010 ESSO Congress in Bordeaux, France last September was one of the most successful and prestigious congresses convened by ESSO to date. It was attended by close to 900 delegates from 61 countries across Europe and internationally. The faculty of renowned speakers included over 100 international experts on a wide range of surgical oncology topics.

Lifetime Achievement Award: Professor Murray Brennan from the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center – New York, USA, was presented the ESSO lifetime achievement award by Professor van de Velde in light of his outstanding contribution to the understanding of soft tissue sarcoma. In his award lecture, Professor Brennan gave a fascinating overview of the key factors that have shaped his career and the lessons that he has learned along the way.

Best video and best poster awards: Thanks to a generous sponsorship of the French Cancer Society (FSC) and of the French Society of Surgical Oncology (SFCO), ESSO awarded monetary prizes for the 3 best videos and the 4 best posters presented at the Congress. Dr. P. Pessaux (FR), Dr. I. Markovic (RS) and Dr. J. Tuech (FR) received the best video awards. Dr. M. Suzuki (JPN), Dr. M. Levy (CZ), Dr. G. Powell (UK) and Dr. L. Woeber (DE) received the best poster awards.

Best Paper Award: The best paper presenters, Dr. M. Maas (NL), Dr. J.S. Mieog (NL) and Dr. S. Mahner (DE), were also rewarded with a monetary prize during the special Niall O’Higgins Best Paper Prize Award Session.

Launch of the ESSO Young Surgeons and Alumni Club
|
The kick-off meeting of the ESSO Young Surgeons and Alumni Club took place during the ESSO 2010 Congress in Bordeaux. The purpose of the Club is to offer young oncology surgeons a platform for discussion and exchange with a view to play an active role in the future of surgical oncology. In this context, the Club will facilitate networking through the ESSO website and a dedicated Linkedln Group, get involved in the development of society activities and projects by providing feedback to the ESSO community on the training and educational needs of young oncology surgeons, assist junior surgeons in dealing with academic surgical oncology, etc.
