ESSO Honorary members

Professor Takeshi Sano (JP) will be presented the ESSO Honorary Award during the partner societies’ session of the ESSO 39 Congress (9-11 October 2019, Rotterdam). Professor Sano graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1980, and in his early thirties, spent 15 months at Institute Curie in Paris. As a specialist gastric cancer surgeon, he has visited more than 42 countries outside Japan for lectures and live demonstration of D2 gastrectomy. He is Secretary General of the International Gastric Cancer Association, and a Council of the Japanese GC Association where he served as a chair of the treatment guidelines. He played central roles in surgical RCTs of Japan Clinical Oncology Group. He is now Director of Cancer Institute Hospital, Tokyo, and is involved in Governmental funding agency for cancer research.Finally, Professor Takeshi Sano (JP) will be presented the ESSO Honorary Award during the partner societies’ session. Honorary Membership is awarded to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the achievement of the goals of the Society particularly in the field of interdisciplinary or international co-operation:

-    Promotion of surgical oncology as part of the multidisciplinary treatment of cancer
-    Building bridges between one’s discipline and surgical oncology and stimulation of multidisciplinary co-operation
-    Integration of new knowledge from one’s discipline in surgical oncology, thus stimulating the development of the speciality

Outstanding figures within the oncology world are awarded the prestigious position of ESSO Honorary members on the occasion of the ESSO congresses.

In previous years honorary membership has been granted to Professor Gabor Cserni (HU), Professor Armando Giuliano (USA), Professor Luigi Cataliotti (IT), Professor Charles Balch (USA), Professor Philip Poortmans (BE),  Professor Theo Wiggers (NL), Professor Niall O'Higgins (IRL), Professor Lars Pahlman (SE), Professor Vincenzo Valentini (IT), Professor Irving Taylor (UK).
