ESSO Leadership's Global Movements 28/11/2017
ESSO Leadership has been busy representing our community and sharing their expertise at conferences and events across the world. This work raises the visibility of Surgical Oncology and the importance of it's recognition as a speciality for the benefit of patients worldwide. This work also fosters new and diverse partnerships, allowing our community to work together more effectively to achieve shared goals. This fall Prof. Santiago Gonzalez Moreno (ESSO President) attended the Portuguese Congress of Oncology which took place October 2017 in Aveiro. The event marked the 35th anniversary of the Portuguese Society of Oncology (SPO) and the congress’ theme was "Oncology in the Age of Precision Medicine". ESSO, ESTRO, ESMO, EONS and SPO came together to represent the different specialities involved in cancer treatment and to strengthen Portugal’s commitment to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. ESSO hosted a joint session with SPO, and Prof. Gonzalez Moreno presented on “Surgical Oncology in Europe: the role of scientific societies” (pictured, left).
EYSAC Chair, Karol Polom was in Lublin, Poland, presenting his experience at the European School of Peritoneal Surface Oncology (ESPSO) at the event Advances in Surgical Oncology "Cytoreductive Surgery & Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy. A month prior Dr. Polom was presenting a tailored session for young surgeons at another ESSO Endorsed Event in Bydgoszcz, Poland: the Interdisciplinary Conference of Surgical Oncology. Prof. Paolo Delrio presented ESSO’s work at the Opening Ceremony of the high-level international and interdisciplinary Conference.
Riccardo A. Audisio, ESSO Past-President and Tibor Kovacs, ESSO President-Elect, lectured at the XIII Brazilian Congress of Oncologic Surgery held in Rio de Janeiro, 25-28 October 2017. ESSO’s Brazilian Affliated Society, SBCO, congress’ theme this year celebrated ‘The Surgical Oncologist as the gateway of Modern Oncology - Tradition, Expertise and Innovation in the Care of Cancer Patients!’ More than two thousand specialists gathered to discuss Surgical Oncology’s integration with other multimodal therapies, complex surgical procedures and advances in treatment. Dr. Kovacs and Prof. Audisio presented a range of topics including an ESSO/SBCO Breast Oncoplastic Surgery Course further strengthening our partnership. In an unprecedented step to unify the Brazilian Oncology movement, the XIII Brazilian Congress of Oncologic Surgery and the Brazilian Congresses of Clinical Oncology and Radiotherapy took place simultaneously to cumulate in the Brazilian Oncology Week, drawing approximately six thousand participants. After oficial recognition by the Brazilian Board of Specialities in July/2017, SBCO is now the official representative of the Surgical Oncology speciality by the Brazilian Medical Association!
Our President-Elect, Tibor Kovacs also lectured on Future Trends in Oncoplastic Breast Conservation at the Indian Cancer Congress in Bengaluru at the invitation of the Indian Association of Surgical Oncology (IASO) (pictured, right) where he was was awarded the 16th Prof. N. C. Misra Oration Award by the Indian Association of Surgical Oncology. ESSO and IASO plan to develop our partnership as part of a global surgical oncology network.
In January, Prof. Audisio will be presenting at the 3rd Annual Surgical Meeting: Surgical Oncology - Advances and Practice in Karachi, Pakistan, attending the Breast,Gynecological & Immunooncology International Cancer Conference in Cairo, Egypt. In February 2018 Tibor Kovacs will present at the Seoul International Symposium of Surgical Oncology 2017, our partner Korean Society of Surgical Oncology’s annual congress. Several members of our leadership will be representing ESSO in Chicago, USA at SSO's Annual Symposium in March 2018.
