ESSO Open letter "Time for Change"09/11/2021
The European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO) has released an open letter entitled "Time for Change: Harnessing the full potential of surgical oncology for cancer patients in Europe" in conjunction with the ESSO 40 Congress and the upcoming implementation of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan.
High-quality surgery remains the best chance to cure solid cancer when diagnosed early and is fundamental in preventing, diagnosing and staging cancer, treating metastatic disease, preserving quality of life and alleviating symptoms. However, many challenges remain to fully unlock its potential. Considering the substantial benefits brought by SO and the increasing needs for high-quality surgery (by 2030, 44 million surgical procedures will be needed worldwide), the open letter calls on EU leaders to:
- Recognise SO as a specialist discipline,
- Support research and innovation in SO,
- Improve screening and early detection to maximise outcomes of SO,
- Include SO as a key component of multidisciplinary cancer care.
We are pleased to learn that MEPs from the BECA Committee have already included these important points in the compromise amendments to the BECA report that were discussed on 8th November.
ESSO now counts on all European leaders to bring these recommendations to life and ultimately, help provide high-quality cancer treatment to each cancer patient in Europe.
