10/12/2021

New affiliated society joined ESSO. During ESSO 40 congress in Lisbon (8th-10th November 2021), Mr Hassan Mailk, ESSO Honorary Secretary and Prof. Dušan Klos, Chair, Surgical Oncology Section, Czech Surgical Society signed a Memorandum of Understanding which signifies the start of a successful relationship between the two parties.

The Surgical Oncology Section of the Czech Surgical Society was created by Prof. M. Duda (Olomouc), Prof. M.Ryska (Prague) and Prof. J. Žaloudík (Brno) in 2002 to represent the surgical oncology community in Czech Republic. It serves as a platform for scientific and professional exchange that surgeons need in Czech Republic in order to develop their specific know-how in this field regardless of organ speciality.

The group aims at:

- working as the interface between oncology and surgery and thus contribute to synergy between the two disciplines

- achieving the recognition of oncosurgery as part of the professional profile of surgeons within his/her specialty in Czech Republic

- strengthening the role of surgeons within multidisciplinary teams for the benefits of all disciplines involved, and especially for patients treated by surgery.

In 2006, the Czech Oncological Society developped the National Oncology Programme and initiated the creation of a network of cancer centres in the country. As one of the outcomes of this initiative, there are 13 Comprehensive Cancer Centres today in Czech Republic, highly specialised in cancer care for adults.

An Educational Programme of Surgical Oncology was created as well. After being approved by the Committee of the Czech Surgical Society, the program was submitted to the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic at the end of 2008. With the approval of the Accreditation Commission, the postgraduate education in oncosurgery became official in the Czech Republic since the end of 2012.
