New educational patient cases released22/04/2022
Thanks to an unrestricted grant from its corporate sponsor, Nutricia, ESSO is pleased to propose several patient case studies addressing the complexity of decision-making with regards to optimal nutritional support for cancer patients undergoing surgery. Developed by Professor Sergio Sandrucci, Professor of Surgery at the University of Turin and ESSO Education & Training Committee Chair and Professor Jozsef Lövey, M.D. Ph.D., from the National Institute of Oncology in Budapest, each case study includes questions and answers with the aim to provide a valuable learning experience as well as recommendations.
Access patient case 6 by Prof. Dr. Mudunov Ali M., MD, PhD, Head of Department of Head and Neck Tumors, KG Lapino, Moscow, Russia.
Professor Mudunov is one of the leading experts in the treatment of head and neck tumors in Russia, President of the Russian Society of Head and Neck Cancer Experts, Russian Academy of Science. Beside the antitumor therapy, he focuses on an adequate nutritional therapy for these patients. In the 6th case he describes a patient journey from diagnosis (cT2N3M0, Stage IVB squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharynx with neck metastasis) till recovery. With this case he points out the impact of weight loss and sarcopenia before or during the treatment on clinical outcomes and prognosis. He demonstrates the importance of regular comprehensive nutrition assessment, adequate nutritional counselling and support at every stage of antitumor therapy and during the follow-up period.
Access patient case 5 by Prof. Dr. Jens Büntzel Department of Otolarynglogy, Südharz Klinikum Nordhausen, Germany.
Prof. Dr. Büntzel is a medical specialist for Head-Neck-Cancer therapy. Beside the surgery, radio – and chemotherapy he focuses on an adequate nutritional therapy for these patients. In the 5th case he describes a patient journey from the beginning of the first diagnosis in 2018 (Glottic carcinoma T1 N0 M0 G1 right vocal cord). By the following three years of treatment (until 2021) he points out the development of the course of disease and the important need for a parallel nutrition therapy. In his conclusions he gives advices for surgeons, radiotherapists and supportive care specialists.
