The European Parliament Intergroup on Cancer and Rare Diseases held its constitutive meeting on 4 February 2025 at the European Parliament in Brussels.
The meeting saw the presentation of the Intergroup’s Declaration, entitled “A Call for an EU Budget that Delivers for Health, Cancer, and Rare Diseases,” a consensus statement supported by representatives from across political groups calling for strengthened EU action in these areas.
Among its central calls, the Declaration advocates for:
- The creation of a dedicated European Cancer Fund in the next EU budget to support and sustain Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan
- The establishment of a European Cancer Institute, or a similar coordinating mechanism, to maximise the impact of EU investment in cancer research and policy
- The expanded use of EU regional funding to address persistent inequalities in cancer care across Europe
The Intergroup aims to serve as a cross-party platform to advance cancer and rare disease prevention, research, treatment, and equity, ensuring these critical health priorities remain at the forefront of EU policymaking.
