Why is Madrid an ideal host city for ESSO 45?
Madrid is a city that brings people together. It is easy to reach from across Europe and beyond, offers outstanding conference facilities, and combines a rich cultural heritage with a modern, dynamic atmosphere. It is a welcoming city where networking continues naturally outside the meeting rooms, making it the perfect setting for scientific exchange and collaboration. It is also particularly exciting because this is the first time ESSO is being held in Madrid.
What does the local surgical oncology community bring to the congress? What is the status of surgical oncology in Spain?
Spain has a strong tradition of excellence in cancer surgery, supported by multidisciplinary teams, high-quality clinical research, and increasing participation in international collaborations.
Although surgical oncology is not officially recognized, Spanish surgeons are actively involved in advancing innovation, education, and clinical trials. The local community is enthusiastic to share its experience, welcome colleagues from around the world, and contribute to a vibrant scientific programme.
What are you personally most looking forward to?
As a Past President of ESSO and a resident of Madrid, I am especially looking forward to welcoming colleagues and friends from across Europe to my home city. It is a unique opportunity to combine an outstanding scientific programme with the warmth and hospitality that Madrid is known for. I am also excited to see new collaborations begin and old friendships renewed.

What is your favourite place in Madrid?
One of my favourite places is El Retiro Park. It perfectly captures the balance that makes Madrid so special: vibrant yet relaxed.
But also the Prado Museum. Whether you are an art enthusiast or a first-time visitor, it is a place that never disappoints.
What is one local experience delegates should not miss?
If you have some free time, I highly recommend visiting one of Madrid’s world-famous museums, especially the Prado. Afterwards, take a walk through El Retiro Park or the historic city centre, and end the day enjoying tapas with colleagues. It is the perfect combination of culture, relaxation, and the warm atmosphere that makes Madrid so special.
Where would you recommend delegates go after a full day at the congress? Where will you go?
I would recommend heading to one of the terraces or traditional restaurants in the city centre, where you can continue conversations with colleagues in a relaxed setting. Personally, I will probably be doing exactly the same, sharing a meal, enjoying great conversation, and showing friends why I love living in Madrid.
