Breast Cancer

The ESSO Training Pathway in Breast Cancer Surgery, developed in collaboration with the European Breast Surgical Oncology Certification (BRESO), is designed to equip surgeons with advanced, evidence-based competencies in breast cancer surgery. The Pathway offers participants the opportunity to further develop their expertise in oncoplastic techniques, robotic surgery, and localisation methods.

What's included

To complete the Pathway and be awarded the ESSO Certificate of Professional Training, candidates should complete the below steps in 24 months:

  • Short-term (minimum 1 month) observership at an ESSO-approved training unit
  • Mandatory breast-specific course
  • At least 2 optional courses (breast-specific or transversal)

Candidates wishing to further extend their expertise may join the BRESO certification programme, which leads to the title of BRESO Fellow.

Related courses

Related webinars

To complement your knowledge gained through the Training Pathway courses, ESSO recommends following optional webinars covering both specialty-specific and transversal topics. These webinars provide in-depth insights, may include interactive case discussions, and are designed to enhance clinical understanding and support continuous professional development.

Short-term observership

Participants in the ESSO Training Pathway in Breast Cancer Surgery are invited to independently arrange a BRESO short-term (1 month) observership at a BRESO-approved breast unit of their choice. Depending on the host unit, the observership may include access to operating theatres, outpatient clinics, MDT meetings, and research activities. Participants are encouraged to pursue tailored learning opportunities, such as role-play sessions and hands-on practice using phantoms. Direct clinical involvement is not anticipated.

ESSO Certificate

The ESSO Certificate of Professional Training is awarded upon successful completion of the full Training Pathway within 24 months. It recognises a surgeon’s advanced knowledge and skills in evidence-based oncological surgery within the relevant specialty. Once you have attended 3 mandatory courses and completed your short-term observership, you may request your ESSO Certificate of Professional Training. To facilitate the review process, please be prepared to provide: • The courses attended, including dates and venues • Details of your short-term observership, including the name of the host institution, the department, name and contact details of mentor and the dates of the observership.

EBSQ examination recommendation

Each year, the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) organises the European Board of Surgery Qualification (EBSQ) Examination in Breast Surgery. This is an optional opportunity for those who feel prepared and wish to further assess and consolidate their knowledge.
